We are well into March and the Cold Fronts keep coming. Just about every 4th day we have a new cold front come down out of the North West with its 25 knot winds. What has made it so bad this year is that when the wind stats it blows for three days making it just horrible to go out into the open water to catch bait.
On Monday we fished the Back side of a cold front. I expected it to be slow and it was. We fished the Bishop Harbor area with very poor results. We then move toward the Little Manatee River and found a few Snook that wanted to bite. I think the bite was no so much as the place we fished but that the water warmed up a few degrees.
On Tuesday the bite was just about as good as it gets. I ran two 4 hour trips that produced over 50 landed snook. 4 Redfish and a number of Trout. Three of the snook were slot fish with the biggest measuring in at 29 inches. We fished from the Cockroach Bay area north to Apollo Beach. Buy the way the wind was blowing out of the south at20 knots. We made it out early before the wind started to blow to catch our bait.
Both trips on Wednesday and Thursday were canceled due to weather. Wednesdays wind blew in access of 30 knots. And Thursday wind blew from the North at 25 knots.
We were able to manage a trip on Friday and to my surprise the bite was slow. The wind did not back around from the North East until late in the day. You could feel just a bit of a chill in the air and when that happens you can bet that the bite will be off. We fished the same areas that we fished on Tuesday with about a 10th of the success.
With the water temperature still sitting in the upper 60’s we should continue to see some good action with Snook and a continued good bite for trout., however, we will have to plan our trips around the cold fronts that are forecasted to be in the area on Monday and Tuesday..
There is no white bait on the flats with most of the bait holding deep around the Skyway.
Catch em up.
