Back when I was kicking around St. Pete in the mid 1980’s, there was a story about a massive hammerhead shark named Old Hitler. Anybody know the story and care to share? Anyone know if the shark could still be alive after all these years?

A long time ago, I was able to dive for a week with a massive school of mating hammerhead sharks. Some were small, like 6’ long, others, most were over 10’. I swear a few were in excess of 15’ long. But it has been a while and I don’t remember how big these sharks actually grow. I could google that. Maybe later.

So, I guess the Old Hitler shark story could be real. I believe it is.

The average lifespan for a hammerhead shark is 20 to 30 years. So Old Hitler is long gone.

The heaviest hammerhead caught was a 1280 pound female caught off Florida, don’t know where.

Hammerheads can reach 20’ long, most are 11.5’ long, so my length memories could be accurate.
