    Guys,

If you have a boat repair question, please do not hesitate asking it. I will do my best to answer all questions. I am limited on the mechanical issues, but if you have a question about your hull, I should be able to assist!

    Hey Fiberglass,

Okay I'll bite, I am running a 98 Gheenoe, have to say I love it, and would only trade it for a new one.

After years of abuse, I mean love on the water, the floor is getting those small spider cracks. Also from a drag here and there she outside has a few scapes and rubs in the gell coat.

Boat does not leak one drop, but I was thinking of having the manufacture strengthen the floor a tad? I am huge, also this winter I toyed with the idea of sanding the the gelcoat and then new paint both inside and out?

Pretty handy myself, the typical weekend warrior. Would you recommend doing this work yourself on a boat a boat this small or having someone who works with these materials more often do it?

If you think this is a job for me, how about listing some steps and things to consider before jumping in feet first.

Thanks, look forward to your post,
    James

    Snook,

The cracks aren't concerning me that much. You're first concern is correct about making the floor stronger. However, the only real way for them to do this is cut the existing floor out the boat, add more bulkheads, runners, and put as much floation foam in the voids as possible. This will reinforce the floor greatly. However, depending on the boat and how much they have to cut to gain access, it can be costly.

Addressing the cracks by themselves is just a waste of time. I tell customers all the time that I can fix the crack, but I can't fix the reason why it cracked without getting on the inside/underside and reinforcing the hull. So they grind the crack out, reglass and refinish it, the crack will almost ALWAYS re-appear. It will move over an inch or two, but it will come back in the same area.

    Good luck!

On a Gheenoe there isn't much you can really do to strenghten the floor. But like N.T. said, the cracks really shouldn't be a problem. Just some stress cracks from use.

    Yup. He is that.

( He has to be...or a certain little lady will fill him full of lead.)

    We'll get to this later...
