I know it's late, but 6 oz is a pretty heavy weight. Was the surf that bad that you needed such a heavy weight? Granted, I'm not a hardcore surf fisherman by any means, but I love to do it. I always try and get away with as little weight as possible. It sounds like you are gearing up for big fish, but using little fish sized bait IMO.
I just got back from Sieata Key and had just about as much fun with a 7 foot MH bass rod and reel spooled with 30lb braid as I did with my big rods after bigger sharks. There was almost 0 wave action, and I used 3 B size pinch on weights, a 1/0 circle hook and a piece of squid on a 20lb fluorocarbon leader. I caugth whiting, catfish and bonnet heads on it, and had a blast.
Next time, you might head to a few local tackle shops and tell them what you are doing and see what they suggest. I did that in Siesta and it helped a TON.
