Thought y'all might like seeing a few photos from the annual tuna trip that goes on through your sister site, the TFF.

This is the 6th year we have put together a YFT trip (2 boats - 48 hours - 170+ miles out). Fish were caught by jigs, topwater and chunking. We fished the southern most floating rig, Noble Clyde Boudreaux, about 6 miles from Mexican waters, then moved a little ways north to Hoover Diana.

They aren't California size - our largest was 97 pounds, but there's a lot more action. We also boated 100s of blackfin. Only did one AJ/Grouper/Snapper drop this trip and the pickings were slim. We usually land quite a few AJ in the 50 to 100 pound range.

There's not much like having a 75+ pound yellowfin hit a topwater you are casting. It's a tough trip, called tuna safaris, and for good reason.

I can imagine with that long of a trip. Do you announce it in advance on any websites? What is the cost for the trip? Looks like one worth traveling for.

I'll put the details up here as soon as the next trip is arranged, which should be in a week or so. We are looking at October or November.

The boat is around $650 to $750 per person. Tip is usually around 15 to 20% depending on the trip. Besides that you have travel and 1 or 2 nights in a hotel.

The equipment is fairly specialized. Most of the junkies have around $2000 and up in their set-ups, but we generally have plenty to cover the newcomers.

We supply our own groceries, but sometimes do group meals.

This type of fishing can really get in your blood, so be careful. smile Almost everyone that joins us starts buying equipment after their first trip.

I can appreciate how that happens. After my first tuna trip here in the North, I now own 3 tuna rods, reels and a seperate tackle box just for canyon fishing.

Have you tried Avet reels. I have 3 now and really like them.

I have not....yet. I hear and see a lot of discussion about them on some forums/boats. Do you like them better than a Penn or Shimano?
